MS70 is the top numerical grade for a Mint State coin on the 1–70 scale. NGC defines a 70 as showing no post-production imperfections at 5× magnification. PCGS publishes its own detailed grading standards. This is a technical grade assigned under a service’s standards, not a claim that a coin can never change or that every MS70 issue is rare.
Condition rarity is not mintage rarity
A modern issue can have many 70-graded examples while an older date may have very few. Compare certified populations, the distribution of grades, and the total issue before treating a perfect grade as a scarce collectible. The services caution that population data are records of coins certified, not the entire surviving population.
MS70 versus PR70 / PF70
MS refers to business-strike Mint State coins. A proof uses a special manufacturing process and may be labeled PR or PF depending on the service. “70” is the numeric ceiling for each strike type, but that does not make an MS70 and a PR70 interchangeable.
Premium checks before buying
- Confirm the certification number and exact coin description.
- Check whether a special label or release designation accounts for the asking premium.
- Review actual photos and any visible spotting or holder damage.
- Compare recent sold examples in the same certification, label, and finish category.
For modern silver coins, seemingly small price differences can reflect marketing labels rather than meaningful underlying rarity. Prioritize the specific item over the headline grade.
