Details Grades: Cleaned, Damaged and Problem Coins

What UNC DETAILS and XF DETAILS really communicate, and how to judge a problem coin without dismissing it blindly.

A Details grade generally signals that a coin has a surface problem that prevents a standard numerical grade under the relevant grading service’s rules. It can still be genuine, collectible, historic, and sometimes valuable. It is simply not directly comparable to a problem-free coin of the same wear level.

What the label is telling you

NGC lists cleaning, scratches, holes, and environmental damage among common causes for Details grading. “XF Details” conveys an approximate level of remaining design detail but also warns you to inspect the stated problem carefully. Not all types or severities of damage have the same effect on market demand.

Why cleaning matters

Harsh cleaning can leave unnatural brightness, hairlines, or compromised surfaces. It does not restore mint luster. A bright appearance alone does not prove a coin has been cleaned; certification opinions and clear lighting matter.

When a Details coin can still make sense

A scarce date or variety may be difficult to obtain problem-free. A thoughtfully priced Details piece can let a collector represent an important issue in a type or date set. But the discount must reflect both the issue and the severity of the surface problem.

Compare the correct comps

Search for the same coin with a similar Details qualifier. Do not use a PCGS MS65 sold price as the sole anchor for an “UNC Details—Cleaned” coin. Photos, severity, return policy, and seller reputation become particularly important.
